Hello, beauties, and welcome back! It's no secret that colder temperatures can affect our skin. Winter is here, and so our chappy lips, over dry legs, and loss of elasticity, these all are signs of skin dehydration! Although drinking water is vital to maintain healthy skin, you still need some external care.
Luckily, I got you covered. Let's learn about the dry skin do's and don'ts from a Board Certified Dermatologist. Dr. Melanie Ortleb is based in Nebraska, and this is what she said!

Alright! Let's start with the basics. Is it necessary to apply moisturizer or natural oil to our skin?
Yes! It is so important to hydrate your skin daily. The more hydrated your skin is, the stronger the barrier function of your skin will be. This translates to less itchy rashes, fewer skin infections, and overall increased skin health.
When would be a good time to do so?
I usually recommend applying the hydrating products after showering so you can lock in all the moisture and not let your skin unprotected after washing away your natural moisture.
I've read that virgin coconut oil is one of the best oils for your skin. Is this true?
If you wish to apply an oil to your skin, be sure to pick one that is non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog your pores and cause acne. Coconut Oil is not the best option for your pores.
Which oil should we pick then?
You need to check the 'comedogenic scale' of oils. Coconut oil has a higher score, whereas sunflower oil is lower on the scale. I tend to recommend this one more.
What about when picking a moisturizer, what should we look for?
My favorites are thick creams that you have to scoop out of a tub. Typically, the thicker they are, the more emollient they are, and the more effective they will be.
Which moisturizer is your favorite?
I love Vanicream because it has very few allergens. I also love CeraVe cream because it's very thick and has ceramides, which are building blocks for the skin.
What about dry and chapped lips?
The most important thing you need to do is avoiding licking your lips! This only makes it worse, although it might feel better at the moment. Also, use some kind of protectant like products with white petrolatum (without a fragrance as it can cause allergy or dermatitis) or Vaniply!
Through our discussion, I learned that my coconut oil routine is a no-no. But, now that I'm aware that there are numerous moisturizing options out there, I'll be ready for the dry, cold winter months – and I hope you are, too!
