How to Get Rid of Under Eye Dark Circles?

Ladies! Welcome to another month and another post here at Ask Fercci. I wanted to ask you this time: have you ever woken up to find that your undereye area is a couple of shades darker than the rest of your face? You’re not alone! These so-called “Panda Eyes” can be difficult to manage. It doesn’t matter how much concealer you use – covering up lack of sleep and dehydration is a challenging task. So, why don’t we try to fix it from the root? Dr. Angela Casey, a certified dermatologist based in Ohio, will walk us through the essential steps to minimize dark circles to get healthier-looking undereye skin.

First things first, it’s important to identify what causes your dark circles.


The most common causes for under eye dark circles are:

  • Extreme fatigue, oversleeping, or not sleeping enough

  • Aging

  • Allergic reactions or eye dryness

  • Dehydration

  • Genetics

Understanding the root of the problem will help you understand how to eliminate or work around the causing factor(s). Dr. Casey has given us some excellent tips to deal with dark circles:


  1. Optimize your skin care regimen with vigilant sun protection. I recommend using SPF 30 or higher with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection to shield your skin against ultraviolet sun damage that can break down collagen and increase pigmentation.

  2. Use a retinoid, such as tretinoin, tazarotene, or adapalene. Using this topically will keep your collagen production active.

  3. Keep the area well-moisturized with a rich eye cream. One of Dr. Casey's favs is Neocutis Lumiere Riche.

  4. Avoid salty foods and alcohol. These can dehydrate your skin, leaving the undereye area to appear puffy and tired.

  5. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

  6. Consume a healthy diet. Including lots of fruits and vegetables, which are loaded with antioxidants that circulate throughout your body and your skin. This translates to less inflammation and damage to the skin.


Extra tip: "Dark circles can also appear due to volume loss in the undereye area. This creates a shadow, which makes the lower eyelid appear puffy and dark. The best way to address volume loss is a full evaluation with a dermatologist, oculoplastic surgeon, or facial plastic surgeon with expertise in treating the undereye area. I have seen incredible results with just a small amount of filler used to correct the volume discrepancy and to help support collagen in the area"
